The head of the African-American studies program at the University of Montana has been met with backlash for a new course aimed at dismantling white supremacy.

Tobin Miller Shearer noticed that a flyer for his new course “White Supremacy History/Defeat” was removed and replaced with an identical flyer with a course entitled “Black Nationalism History/Defeat.”

“It’s very disturbing because of the amount of time that was put into making it look real,” Shearer told The Missoulian.

The flyer was such a great copy that it used the name of a faculty member that hasn't been at the university for a decade or longer.

Originally, the flyer created by Shearer featured an image of white supremacist protesters taking part in the violent Charlottesville Unite the Right protests back in August. This course, intended to educate people about the history of white supremacy in the nation, was detailed in several bullet points and scheduled for spring 2018.

The perpetrator kept the same format, changed the course name, featured a photo of the Black Panthers from the 1960s and included the misspelled name of a former director of the African-American studies program. This new flyer also included the tagline “aimed at dismantling race-baiting hypocrisy” to hammer home the anti-black sentiment.

“It’s at best someone who knows the history of the program. At worst, it’s another faculty member who knows the history,” Shearer pointed out.

According to The Missoulian, the harassment has been reported to the police.

I’m not surprised by this,” he said. “I’m disturbed by this.”
