TikTok user Doonigalli posted a video with her blond hair in a ponytail and two faux strands of baby hair styled to her forehead, calling them “sticky bangs.”
“So I’ve been doing this hairstyle for the past two days, and I’m just a little bit obsessed with it. So I’ve decided I’m going to make it a trend. I’m gonna call it sticky bangs, and I love it, so if you want a tutorial just tell me you want one,” Doonigalli says in the video.
Her feeble attempt at cultural appropriation was met with instant disapproval as TikTok user Alli Fitz called out her problematic antics, according to Metro.
After receiving backlash, Doonigalli deleted her video, apologized and clarified that her post was “literally a joke,” adding that she “was being dumb in the moment.”
Twitter has previously called out other white women, including actress Hilary Duff, for similar antics.
The backlash comes as lawmakers have been passing the CROWN Act across the country, barring employers from discriminating against potential job candidates and employees based on their hair.
As Blavity previously reported, Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) introduced a federal CROWN Act bill in 2019 that would prohibit discrimination against people wearing “protective hairstyles associated with people of African descent.”
“Discrimination against Black hair is discrimination against Black people,” Booker said, according to his website. “Implicit and explicit biases against natural hair are deeply ingrained in workplace norms and society at large. This is a violation of our civil rights, and it happens every day across the country.”
