I don’t know about you, but I come from a generation of Black Americans who have placed tremendous pressure on our celebrities to get involved in the distinct needs of our communities with political agendas that aim to address those needs. We say Michael Jordan isn’t the GOAT because he did not support a Black politician’s run in North Carolina. We were livid when Charles Barkley proclaimed he wasn’t a role model. We questioned LeBron James’ basketball supremacy because he did not wear any Black Lives Matter accessories on his jersey this past season. But when a Black multi-millionaire decides he is going to come up with a plan, explicitly cultivated to address the issues that stifle Black Americans, we swoop in like vultures and attack it as it is a carcass lying in a field. We gotta do better, y’all.

We can argue all day about Ice Cube’s timing, who he met with or how this connects to his own agenda, but that would be a tremendous waste. What we should be grateful for is that a Black millionaire, who is very far removed from the poverty, racism and prejudice that impacts most Black Americans daily, decided it was time to create a Black agenda to which those in power need to commit.

Let’s be extremely clear: Black Americans have not seen great strides occurring in our impoverished communities for decades, no matter which political party was at the helm. Let’s stop pretending that we have not been ignored for centuries. Most importantly, let’s not deny that the “people of color bucket” is yet another attempt to confine the marginalized, because every group in the bucket has its own unique needs. We cannot continue to be generalized by the hues of our skin. Instead, our individual issues need to be addressed if we truly want to see progression in this country.

Does Ice Cube’s plan need to be enhanced? Possibly. Is there for room for improvement in the living document he created? Absolutely, that’s why it’s called a living document. Does it deserve our support? Emphatically, yes it does, because Cube has gone to those in power and demanded that they acknowledge our issues and discuss next steps.

You see, we all know, like Cube does, that all of this is political propaganda. But like the cliché says, you have not, because you ask not. Cube has done the asking, and we need to come together and support him.

As Black Americans, we are living in unprecedented times. Our voices are being heard. Seats at the table are being prepared for us. We are being embraced and welcomed into spaces that have been designed specifically for white Americans. But this is not an open invitation with a date that does not expire. This is a fleeting opportunity that will soon be gone. I do not want to look back at this window and complain about all of the missed prospects because we were too busy over-examining and finding fault, when we could have collectively collaborated to present a unified stance to the powers that be.

We owe it to our children and their children to seize the moment. I implore you to visit IceCube.com and review the plan, “A Contract With Black America,” for yourself. He addresses loans, ownership, capital, prison reform, credit, police reform and, most importantly, Black responsibility. These are issues that have plagued us since 1619. Why are we fighting each other over the very problems that have caused insurmountable obstacles for our community?

Let’s use our power to demand that Trump and Biden commit to the implementation and execution of this plan as soon as a winner is declared. Let’s take this moment for what it is — a chance to receive our due. In the words of Jay-Z, this is a “blueprint for you to print, a map for you to get back, a guide for your eyes so you won’t lose scent.”

Ice Cube’s plan does not have to be the end all be all, but it is most definitely a blueprint — a great place to start the dialogue and force the powerful into action. We shouldn’t fight Ice Cube when we have to navigate Kanye West and the Birthday Party, with its frivolous campaign agenda, or 50 Cent, who supports Donald Trump while stating he doesn’t care that the President of the United States, the greatest nation in the world, doesn’t like Black people. Instead, we need to ensure that the millions of valuable Black votes we possess do not go toward people and ideologies that will set us back even further. We gotta do better, y’all.
