Rachel can teach us a lot about interracial dating, ladies. The most recent episode was intense! The bachelorette eliminated three very attractive, very eligible black men. She didn't just stop there. She took two more on one-on-one dates. It may seem like Rachel is being harder on the brothas as she zeroes in on them this week. Last week, we got a very close look at the mass bromance thing that was going on with them—it was very cool to watch, but that's the thing. She's gotta be thinking, "which ones are having more fun hanging out in the hotel than actually being with me?" It's time to break up the frat, and she did it the right way. Rachel eliminated the ones she didn't feel were pursuing her (well, except for Josiah—his ego was just unbearably annoying). In doing that, she made a really good case for why it is important to be open. Some of these guys will really be amazing for her (Heyyy Peter—but she really likes Bryan—get him girl!).
It's about desire and compatibility, plain and simple. And that doesn't have a color. Ultimately she's got to pick one, and it would be a shame to make the wrong choice because she's got some idea of what her relationship is supposed to look like. That doesn't mean the black men aren't a little more significant to her, because they are. Black men are a part of who she is as a black woman, they always have been and always will be. She probably felt protective of them (bye, Lee!), even in the midst of trying to find what she needs. It's clear that Rachel values them and holds them in high regard, even as she has to start getting real about which relationships are doing better.
So, she sends Kenny home on a wave of winning, admiration and great Dad swag because there was no spark there.
She kept the ambivalent and arrogant ones long enough to take them overseas.
She exposed the one that might like white girls better, which was really rough to watch (been there!).
She dived in head first with the one that really likes her (Awww, Eric is a sweetheart).
Now Rachel's got all the ones that really care for her left (Wait…right Peter?? What's happening in these previews. They playin'). Interracial dating fun fact: rejection from one of the white guys will probably sting more…but I'm getting ahead of myself. In the end we hope she finds happiness, and that's worth thinking of herself, as a woman first. Lessons on lessons on lessons.
