Will Packer continues his push into TV via his Will Packer Productions shingle, which 2 new projects in development, both at NBCUniversal, where Packer has an overall deal which was recently extending through 2017.
The first is an hour-long drama created by Alison McDonald (readers of this blog will also know her as Audra McDonald’s sister, whose delightful short work has been a highlight on this site previously). Titled "Under Her Thumb," the drama, which has a received a pilot commitment from NBC/Universal TV, and is described as “’Glengarry Glen Ross’ meets ‘The Real Housewives’”, is set in the world of high-end New York City real estate.
McDonald, who wrote the series, will also executive produce with Packer. No word yet on whether she’ll also star.
Second, Will Packer and Eva Longoria have teamed for a comedy titled "Bonita & Mechelle," which follows 2 women – an African American and a Hispanic – who find themselves living together while tackling the trials and triumphs of single life and parenting.
Veteran writer and producer Kriss Turner Towner ("Something New," "The Bernie Mac Show," "Living Single," "The Soul Man") will script (and co-exec produce) the project along with both production companies for Packer and Longoria.
Both projects, assuming they’re picked up to series down the road, could potentially join two new Will Packer series that were ordered to series and will debut this fall: "Truth Be Told" on NBC and "Uncle Buck" on ABC.
Packer is maybe at the peak of his lengthy career, on the heels of the massive box office successes of "Straight Outta Compton" and "Ride Along" (for which a sequel is coming next year). He’s also executive producing the upcoming "Roots" remake for A+E Networks.
