Will Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment has teamed up with Legendary Television to sell a half-hour comedy to Fox, which will star South African comedian Trevor Noah, inspired by his own life.
Born to a white Swiss father and black South African mother, Noah’s mixed-race heritage, including his experiences growing up in a Soweto township, and his observations about race and ethnicity, are frequent themes addressed in his comedy.
He’s said to be the first South African stand-up comedian to appear on The Tonight Show and The David Letterman Show, and was the subject of the 2012 documentary You Laugh But It’s True. He currently can be found on Showtime, on his comedy special titled African American.
Sameer Gardeezi will write the script for the yet-to-be-titled Fox comedy.
