So many different changes take place to women’s bodies after giving birth. While there are positive enhancements, there are many scary aftereffects women endure. Among the tons of stories already out there, Brooke, known on TikTok as @brookesobasic, detailed a breastfeeding experience with her first child, which terrified her.

The viral video is part of a series titled “I Wish Somebody Would’ve Told Me.” In this edition, she explained the backstory of how and why her nipple fell off while nursing.

“You hear the horror stories. People talk about the pain and that they just couldn’t do it. It’s like every time you go to latch your baby on you’re clenching your ass cheeks together because you know it’s going to hurt,” she starts off saying in the video.

She continued, “So, here I am, 15, just gave birth … trying to get my baby to latch; feeling like he has a good latch.”

She told her followers that she felt “very positive” because she went to see her lactation counselor and her baby was gaining weight. This was until she realized the latch wasn’t as good as she thought.

“My nipples started to turn black at the base and white at the tip. That’s a signal for bad blood flow. There’s no blood flow getting to the nipple. That’s a dead nipple and dead tissue,” she shared.

During her typical time of breastfeeding, she noticed that her baby boy stopped. When she looked down, he was “kind of choking” on her nipple, which scared her.

“My nipple broke off, and he had it in his mouth. I start to panic. I start to freak out. I don’t know what the hell is going on,” Brooke said. “Luckily, I was with my mom and my sister, and they were like, ‘hurry, let’s get the nipple and get it back on.'”

Moving quickly, she rinsed the nipple off in water, put it back on and immediately called her advice nurse, sharing the situation. The nurse let her know that “if the nipple is still alive and has enough blood flow in it, it can actually reattach itself and to keep that band-aid on.”

She followed the nurse’s orders and her nipple, as the nurse said, reattached itself — although it’s not the same as before.

“My nipple’s not perfect today, but it’s still here,” the mom stated.

Although this isn’t widely talked about, it’s not an uncommon thing for mothers who are breastfeeding to experience. This is a condition known as vasospasm and necrosis (death of body tissue), which is the narrowing of the arteries caused by a persistent contraction of the blood vessels, which is known as vasoconstriction.

Brooke claimed that since the day her nipple fell off she has never breastfed again and has no plans to. (However, a note on the video said she has “been able to breastfeed three more babies.”)

She ended the video by saying, “That was the last day I ever breastfed that child. I will never breastfeed again.” She continued, “I heard breastfeeding was painful and hard to adjust to; I never knew my nipple could actually detach.”

People were shocked in the comment section of the video.

“These stories always find me when I’m paranoid and pregnant,” said one user.

Another added, “The way my jaw dropped. Did it not hurt that much anymore or what?”

“I was an L&D (labor and delivery) nurse and NEVER heard a story like this!!!! I always said a fed baby was a happy and healthy baby,” a nurse commented.
