Actress and singer Zendaya has been cast in the latest reboot in Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise. It was announced last year that actor Tom Holland is set to portray Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Marisa Tomei will be Aunt May.

Deadline is reporting that the “Something new” singer has been “quietly” testing for the role for quite some time now. Zendaya will play a character named Michelle.

Few details are known about the character, and it is unknown if she will serve as a love interest for Parker. There is a character in The Amazing Spider Man canon named Michelle Gonzales, a brief love interest in Peter’s older years while he was separated from Mary Jane. However, some outlets are speculating that “Michelle” may be a casting cover for Mary Jane or a friend of Peter’s.

This role has the potential to be the Disney star’s breakthrough move into mainstream film. She was considered to be Storm in the X-Men reboot, before the role went to Alexandra Shipp, who replaced Zendaya in last year’s controversial Lifetime Aaliyah biopic after she dropped out.

I’m personally excited to see this happen. I was hoping she would get the Storm role, but since that didn’t happen, hopefully this will be a great success. I’m excited! Are you?
