U.S. government officials are clearing up some misinformation people have been hearing about a $2,000 stimulus payment from the IRS. Despite the speculations that have been spreading on social media platforms, officials said there is no plan at the moment to give out a fourth stimulus check, AInvest reported.

What did Trump say about giving Americans $2,000 stimulus checks?

While officials are now debunking the rumors about the stimulus checks, President Donald Trump recently brought up the idea of giving tariff rebates for Americans. When he was asked about the tariff revenue on July 25, Trump said there’s a possibility of giving out rebates to the public.

“We’re thinking about that actually,” Trump said, according to azcentral. “We have so much money coming in, we’re thinking about a little rebate. But the big thing we want to do is pay down debt. But we’re thinking about a rebate.”

Following Trump’s comments, Missouri Republican Sen. Josh Hawley said he’s sponsoring the American Worker Rebate Act of 2025, azcentral reported. Hawley said the check would be similar to the stimulus checks Americans received during the pandemic, providing at least $600 per adult and dependent child or a $2,400 payment for a family of four. However, Congress would have to approve any proposed stimulus checks.

Trump had also told Americans that they could expect payments from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, which claimed to bring in savings by cutting funds from several prominent agencies, which never actually happened.
