Since the passing of young artist and community leader Ermias Joseph “Nipsey Hussle” Asghedom, the hip-hop world has passionately responded to the late rapper’s death, honoring his memory in various ways. Hussle, who fervently showcased a strong dedication to improving the lives of Black and brown people in LA and beyond, has been revered for his humanitarianism and commitment to community engagement. As such, his memory lives on through public figures and average citizens, who have been further motivated to make a difference by improving the lives of underrepresented communities.

Born August 15, 1985, we pay tribute to this loving leader on what would have been his 34th birthday by celebrating his achievements as well as the positive impact his short life continues to have on others. As someone whose selfless leadership has helped to instill hope in the hearts of many, here are six ways we have etched the beloved Nip’s legacy into history.

1. The Nipsey Hussle Tower

On August 1, 2019, Lauren London, the late rapper’s girlfriend and mother of his son, officially announced that the plaza, which houses the rapper’s store, The Marathon Clothing, would be gated in preparation of building the Nipsey Hussle Tower. After acquiring the store location in 2017 and expanding his holdings to cover the entire corner plaza, Hussle’s plans were to tear down the center and replace it with a residential tower to support affordable living and retail establishments to create more jobs. Aside from the notice that construction will begin this month, additional information regarding the tower has yet to be released.

2. The New Ermias ‘Nipsey Hussle’ Asghedom Square

Earlier this year in April, Los Angeles City Councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawson announced that the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and West Slauson Avenue would be renamed in honor of Hussle. The proclamation, which came about after an online petition to change the intersection’s name surfaced and received resounding support, will permanently plant Hussle’s name into the Crenshaw neighborhood that he called home. With every car or person that travels through the intersection, ensuring the rapper’s name and legacy will continue to live on.

3. The Presentation Of ‘Nipsey Hussle’ At The Wearable Art Gala

At the 2019 Wearable Art Gala in June, which was hosted by Tina Knowles-Lawson and Richard Lawson, visual artist Tiffanie Anderson’s spectacular artwork honoring Hussle was seemingly the highlight of the night. The project, a beautifully crafted creation made almost entirely out of broken glass,  reportedly led to a bidding war between many notable celebrities, including Tiffany Haddish, Issa Rae, Tyler Perry and Phylicia Horowitz. Ultimately, Horowitz went home with the piece. Best of all, all the proceeds from the sale went toward supporting teen programs at the Lawsons’ community-based arts and performance center, the WACO Theater — which is probably what Nip would’ve wanted.

4. Murals Across The Country

VeniceBall, a basketball group based in California’s Venice Beach, even unveiled a basketball court that featured a full mural of Hussle as a gift to the community at Crete Academy, a local nonprofit charter school in the Crenshaw neighborhood. The school’s founder, Hattie Mitchell, deemed it important for the youth to understand the importance of giving back through the example shown by the late rapper.

“He grew up where they grew up. He’s the epitome of everything that they want to be and aspire to be,” she told CBS Los Angeles at the reveal.

However, California neighborhoods aren’t the only ones that have commemorated Hussle’s life with public displays of creativity that have enriched the area. Since his passing, numerous murals and artistic representations of the entrepreneur, businessman and servant have sprouted up in several cities across the United States. In addition to more than 50 murals located across Los Angeles alone, other pieces of art have even been crafted in Hartford, Connecticut, and Atlanta.

In addition to receiving a tribute performance courtesy of his musical peers YG, John Legend, and DJ Khaled, this past June, Hussle was posthumously named as the winner of the 2019 BET Humanitarian Award. Recognized for his commitment to advocating for STEM and entrepreneurship as well as his efforts to eradicate gang violence, the Grammy nominee’s grandmother, mother and father delivered riveting words during the speech as they accepted the award on his behalf.

When former Oklahoma City Thunder star Russell Westbrook earned a historic 20-20-20 triple-double on April 2, he dedicated his athletic feat to Hussle. The game, fittingly played against the Los Angeles Lakers, came days after the passing of the artist, who had previously shown support to Westbrook at his foundation’s Thanksgiving dinner as well as NBA games.

A native of California, Westbrook became only the second player to record 20 points, 20 rebounds and 20 assists in an NBA game. As soon as he secured the achievement, Westbrook could be seen on the court emphatically stating “That’s for Nipsey,” with the significance found in 60 (the sum of the three 20s) referring to “The 60s,” the name of the  South Los Angeles neighborhood the rapper called home.
