Less than a week after President Trump's infamous "sh*thole countries" remark, one artist decided to clapback to the president's comments visually, using Trump's very own hotel as the canvas. According to Huffington Post, Bells Visuals founder Robin Bell used a video projector to light up Trump International Hotel in D.C. with "sh*thole" and several poop emojis last weekend.
Along with, “This place is a sh*thole,” messages such as “This is not normal,” “Stay vigilant,” “#resist" and “The president distracts us from politics that are harming us” were displayed across the front of the hotel building.
Bell is no stranger to this kind of protest. In the past, the artist has also displayed “emoluments welcome” and “pay Trump bribes here” on the very same D.C. hotel. Bell also projected “#SessionsMustGo” and “I thought the KKK was OK until I learned that they smoked pot” on the Department of Justice building as a jab to Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
Bell's latest installation is part of a widespread backlash to Trump's comments. The president reportedly asked “Why are we having all these people from sh*thole countries come here?," referring to Haiti, El Salvador and countries in Africa during a White House immigration meeting.
Although the president and a few of his allies later denied that those words were said, others in the room have sworn that the president did indeed use the harsh language attributed to him.
Following the accusations, Don Lemon of CNN called Trump a "racist," and Texas anchor Alisha Laventure went viral for her critique of the president. Several lawmakers (from both political parties) have also called called upon Trump to apologize for his remarks.
