During an event called "Chat Talk" with the General Manager of the Atlanta Hawks, something disturbing happened. Wes Wilcox, the general manager, answered questions from roughly 200 season ticket holders and club members. These days, everyone thinks they are a coach or commentator, especially season ticket holders, and club members. Even though the Hawks have won their last seven games, the "Chat Talk" got intense. In response to the escalated tension and comments about what the Hawks should be doing, Wes Wilcox gave what he thought was the best answer. According to Deadspin Wilcox stated: " I know you guys may be angry with me, but I'm used to it because I have a black wife and three mixed kids, so I'm used to people being angry and argumentative."
His comments didn't sit well with the fans (Did he forget the demographic of Atlanta?). As a matter of fact, one fan, in particular, wasn't too fond of the joke considering her was a black man. Clarenton Crawford sent an email to the team president, Steve Koonin, on Dec.19th describing the incident. The Hawks launched an investigation to determine what happened during the chat. During the investigation from Dec. 27th to January 9th, they interviewed season ticket holders and club members who were present. It was determined that Wilcox did not use the words "angry" and "argumentative", but he did use a racially charged joke.
Long story short, the Atlanta Hawks did not disclose how Wilcox was "disciplined," but he was. He also issued an "apology" for his remarks.
