While Aretha Franklin's homegoing was full of high points, Bishop Charles H. Ellis III's uncomfortable moment with singer Ariana Grande was definitely a low point for her and fans of Franklin.
Ellis, after pressure from social users, has apologized for touching Grande in an inappropriate way during the homegoing on Friday, August 31, reports the Associated Press.
Grande had just finished performing her rendition of “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” when Ellis greeted her in, what many have called, an awkward hug.
BISHOP CHARLES H. ELLIS III. YOU ARE A FUCKING PERVERT AND A DISGUSTING PERSON. YOU ARE A LOW DOWN PIECE OF SHIT. I HOPE YOU GET ALL THE BACKLASH YOU DESERVE FOR THIS. I HOPE @ArianaGrande speaks out about this‼️ #RespectAriana

Video clips from the incident show Ellis caress Grande in a sexual manner around the breast area. She looks onward in an uncomfortable and disgusted way. There a few times she laughs off the awkwardness, but it is clear she isn't comfortable.
“I hug all the female artists and the male artists,” Ellis said. “Everybody that was up, I shook their hands and hugged them. That’s what we are all about in the church. We are all about love.”
He added, “The last thing I want to do is to be a distraction to this day. This is all about Aretha Franklin.”
However, the moment had another moment in which Ellis joked about Grande's name. Video from the Detroit Free Press shows the moment he makes the "dad joke."
“I personally and sincerely apologize to Ariana and to her fans and to the whole Hispanic community,” Ellis said. “When you’re doing a program for nine hours you try to keep it lively, you try to insert some jokes here and there.”
