After Hurricane Maria slammed Puerto Rico as a Category 5 storm, a number of celebrities jumped into action to provide assistance to those in need. Freddie Figgers, owner of one of the nation's largest black-owned cell phone companies and networks, is also doing his part to help the people of Puerto Rico.
According to Black News, Figgers Communication donated 500 satellite phones and SIM cards with unlimited calls, texts and data to help families affected by the recent devastation caused by Hurricanes Maria and Irma.
“The hurricane destroyed the entire island’s telecommunications’ network,” said 28-year-old Figgers who founded Figgers Communication. “We’re trying to do all we can to help these families communicate with each other and especially their loved ones.”
Figgers, who grew up in Quincy, Florida, said he saw the effects of the hurricane and how people had lost everything and felt the need to do something. Figgers said the SIM cards for the donated phones are activated for 90 days, free of charge. The SIM cards and phones are available and will be distributed at the San Juan Airport to individual families.
“We all need to do our part to make sure that Puerto Rico gets back on its feet," he said.
In 2013, Figgers developed the custom-designed “F1” phone that has automatic anti-texting functionality and fast charging. In October, he will release the F2 phone, which will be waterproof and shatterproof. Figgers Communication is currently one of the few telecoms in the U.S. that manufactures its own phone and provides its own service.
The recent devastation in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands after being hit by major hurricanes has encouraged many to get involved in helping those in need get back on their feet. Jay-Z recently announced that Tidal will deliver hurricane aid to Puerto Rico, while his wife Beyoncé recently dropped the "Mi Gente" remix and proceeds from sales will benefit Mexico and Puerto Rico. Previously, NBA star Carmelo Anthony also donated $50,000 for relief efforts in Puerto Rico.
