Champion, the BBC and Netflix musical drama starring Malcolm Kamulete and Déja J. Bowens, will not get a second season.

The news was quietly announced in the UK back in March, as Express reported. The series, created written by Candice Carty-Williams, was not returning to the broadcasting service even though it earned vast critical acclaim. Carty-Williams broke the news to fans, saying she was sad she would not be able to bring the series back.

“I am grateful to each and every one of you who watched the show, posted about it. listened to the soundtrack, and shouted at me in the street because the soundtrack wasn’t available outside of the UK (we’re working on it),” she wrote. “DMd about their favourite characters; yes to #JusticeForLennox and I know, Beres is wicked, songs, moments, and threatened me for a season 2.”

“The good news is, Champion was watched by–now I’ve seen the numbers–millions of you, was in the top 10 in so many majority Black countries, was the number one Netflix show in Jamaica, Guadeloupe and Martinique(!), and was given majority 5 stars across the board,” she wrote. “Champion was for us and by us, and it was a success! It reached so many of us at home and around the world.”

The series was commissioned by the BBC and Netflix swiftly picked up the rights for outside of the UK and Ireland.

Carty-Williams also revealed that she never intended to write a second season and said she is working on “other things.” The other projects she might be referencing is her new show, Queenie, which is currently airing on Hulu from the Onyx Collective. However, she did give fans a wrap-up of their favorite characters’ storylines.

Champion follows two siblings, Bosco (Kamulete) and Vita (Bowens) who become industry competitors as they both vie for musical dominance. The series also stars Nadine Marshall, Ray Fearson, Rachel Adedeji, Kerim Hassan, Ray BLK, Jo Martin, Tom Forbes, Francis Lovehall, Fergus Rees, Adeyinka Akinrinade, Genesis Lynea and Karl Collins.
