Nearly 2,000 products, including food items and beauty products, have been recalled due to rodent and bird contamination at a Minneapolis facility.

The recall was initially issued in Dec. 26 by Gold Star Distribution, Inc., according to the FDA and as reported by People. The FDA then reclassified the recall to a category II last week. Here’s everything you need to know.

Gold Star Distribution, Inc. recalled nearly 2,000 products that were stored at a Minneapolis facility on Dec. 26

Food items, pet foods, beauty products and drugs were distributed to stores across Indiana, Minnesota and North Dakota.

The recall concerns a wide range of products including but not limited to Jolly Ranchers, Skittles and Sour Patch Kids, as well as Pringles, Takis, Cheerios and Kellogg’s Rice Krispies Cereal, People reported.

Affected items also include drinks like Gatorade, Coca-Cola, Smart Water and Arizona Iced Teas. The recall also includes Heinz Ketchup, Crisco Oil and cinnamon sticks, as well as Pepto Bismol, Axe body spray, Q-Tip cotton swabs, Fancy Feast cat food and Gillette razors.

The full list of stores that recalled products were distributed to may be found on the FDA’s official notice, while the list of specific items affected can be found on this list.

The FDA found that the Minneapolis facility was operating under ‘insanitary conditions’

Per the FDA, the “insanitary conditions” include the “presence of rodent excreta, rodent urine, and bird droppings.”

Products may have been in contact with surfaces with airborne particles of animal waste from rodents and birds. Exposure to contaminated products poses a risk of salmonella or leptospirosis. The latter of which is a bacterial disease stemming from exposure to animal urine.

Last week, the FDA gave the recall a Class II. This means that using the products “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote,” according to their website.

Gold Star Distribution, Inc. recommended customers not to consume the items and to “destroy the products as soon as possible.”
