Many of us haven't quite figured out the secret to a long-lasting happy and healthy relationship. Meanwhile, Denzel Washington and his lovely wife Pauletta have enjoyed close to four decades of marriage. If you're wondering what their secret is, Denzel spoke with People to make it abundantly clear.

“I do what I’m told. I keep my mouth shut,” the 63-year-old joked.

Preach, Uncle Denzel! The rest of y'all, please take notes.

The couple tied the knot in 1983 after meeting on the set of the television film Wilma. Their union has brought forth four children including BlacKkKlansman star John David Washington, daughter Katia and twins Olivia and Malcolm.

All jokes aside, the Academy Award-winning actor does admit many factors play into a successful relationship. Showing appreciation for your partner seems to be at the top of the list.

“There’s too many things!” Washington exclaimed when asked what he appreciates most about his better half. “What pops into my head: security, food, a beautiful home. The difference between a house and a home, it’s a big difference. You can buy a house, but that doesn’t make it a home – and not to say a man can’t make a home a home, but my wife has made our house a home, and raised these beautiful kids and protected them and sacrificed for them, she did the heavy lifting.”

He also admits her cooking skills help to fuel the love train that's been rolling for years.

“She has a few [specialties]. I’ve been eating her curry chicken since I’ve known her,” he said. “I used to make it too, but not as good as hers.”
