Continuing to build on its library of original scripted content, Hulu has announced the streaming platform’s has put into development a comedy anthology series titled “Bitches,” which is based on the Brazilian series “As Canalhas,” itself inspired by the book “Canalha, Substantivo Feminino” by Martha Mendonça.
The original series featured stories of 13 women, one for each episode, telling tales of their evil deeds against various people in their lives: daughters, husbands, friends, school mates, and others. The idea behind the book and series is to turn the tables on the idea that men are the more naughty and nefarious gender, as women can be just as wicked – hence the title “Bitches.”
The Hulu series will follow a similar structure, telling a different story for each episode, featuring a different “bitch” detailing her various misdeeds.
is on board to script the series, along with G.L. Lambert; and Ben Stiller’s Red Hour banner is producing.
No word yet on whether Ms. Stewart will direct as well. She’s been busy, helming episodes of shows like “Pretty Little Liars,” “The Fosters,” “The Game,” “UnREAL,” with episodes of “Major Crimes,” “How to Get Away With Murder” and “Grey’s Anatomy” on her upcoming slate. So directing this Hulu series as well shouldn’t be a stretch.
Stiller, Nicky Weinstock, Jonathan Krauss, Fernanda Torturra and Stuart Cornfeld are set to executive produce.
