As the floodwaters from Hurricane Harvey in Houston and east Texas continues to wreak havoc, thousands of residents have had to leave their homes and relocate to shelters. Many people lost everything except for their lives.

Experts have estimated that 50 inches of rainfall have drenched the Houston area and nearly 50 people have died because of Harvey.

Salon owner Christal Mercier, 59, wanted to do something about that. So, she decided to lift people's spirits by providing those in need with hair cuts and new hair styles.

She organized the Gallery of Salons as a network of volunteer black women salon owners to help evacuees. They shut down their own salons went to the NRG Center in Houston to clean and style the hair of the displaced. According to Buzzfeed, 2,440 people are currently inside the evacuation shelters.

"You might have gone through the storm but you don't have to look like you went through the storm," Mercier told Buzzfeed.

The Missouri City, Texas native has had a long history of helping others. Mercier also runs a not-for-profit called Hair Dreams by Christal that helps those who've lost hair due to chemotherapy or other issues.

"If you make people look good on the outside, they feel good on the inside," said Mercier. This act of kindness is just one of many instances where people have lent a helping hand during an extremely trying time.
