The phrase “it’s a small world” is all too relatable for Janelle Monáe and Marsai Martin right now.

The Grammy-nominated artist and Black-ish star are basking in joy after recently learning that they’re cousins.

The duo discussed their newfound family lineage in InStyle’s September issue.

“My family members would always tell me how we were related, so I was excited when we finally got to meet and say hello in person,” Martin said.

The Kansas City, Kansas, natives said they met a while back during a Golden Globes after-party where Monáe talked with Martin’s mother about their close-knit community. Monáe joked that the two are "cousins on cousins on cousins.”

“You were with your mom, and she was naming members of my family, and I was like, ‘Oh my goodness!’ I don’t meet many people who know about my small community in Kansas City, Kan.,” Monáe added.

The 33-year-old also gushed about the 15-year-old powerhouse and the lineage discovery.

“It was the best news because I’m such a fan of you and your role on Black-ish,” the singer went on.

The two also shared admiration for each other’s style with Martin noting how she appreciates pieces that “make a statement.” She said one of her favorite outfits of Monáe’s was her 2019 Met Gala outfit, “Yo, that eye wink, so dope.”

The “Hidden Figures” star celebrated this year’s “Camp” theme with a bold, eye-catching custom Christian Siriano dress that had an eye on her chest fluttered with lashes.

The “I Like That” singer also revealed her humble beginnings growing up in their hometown.

“I used to wear Jordans with a Jaguars Starter jacket. I was working at Blockbuster and as a waitress. I was even a maid. I didn’t have the money, so I had to get creative in high school.”

Monáe went on to admit how she was still discovering her own identity as a teenager and how she admired the actress-producer.

“Marsai, you have it, girl. You're too cool for school,” she said.
