Jay-Z was once a drug dealer who earned his wages selling cocaine in Brooklyn, New York. Today, he is the richest musician in the country.

On Tuesday, Forbes released its annual list of America's richest celebrities. Jay-Z only trails Star Wars creator George Lucas, director Steven Spielberg, media mogul Oprah and NBA great Michael Jordan with a total of $900 million in assets. He has company in that spot, though. Reality television star turned cosmetics CEO Kylie Jenner also boasts a $900 million net worth.

It may not hurt that the 21-time Grammy winner also has multiple sources of income. In addition to he and wife Beyoncé's massive $253.5 million profit from their worldwide On the Run II tour this year, the "99 Problems" rapper also signed a lucrative 10-year, $200 million dollar deal with concert promoter and ticketing site Live Nation, as Time reported in January. Jay also invested $20 million in tech start-up JetSmarter, which is an Uber and Lyft concept that provides private jet services for wealthy individuals worldwide.

Jay-Z's newly minted status puts him above fellow rapper Diddy, who held the post as the highest paid artist in 2017. This year, the Bad Boy Entertainment founder came in at No. 8 on the Forbes list with a net worth of $825 million.
