Kevin Hart seemingly has had a change of heart about having a gay son.
During a recent appearance with Ziwe Fumudoh, the comedian known for her satirical commentary on politics, race relations and young adulthood, Hart disclosed personal thoughts around the viral “gay son or thot daughter” debate that occasionally circulates on social media.
What is his stance?
“I would rather have two healthy kids,” the Laugh at My Pain comedian said when Ziwe posed the question, as The Grio reported. “Like, it doesn’t matter to me.”
“The fact that you have to put them in those two categories says a lot about who you are,” Hart continued. “I’m just telling you I think the real problem is in the thinker, not the answerer. The thinker. Maybe you should just ponder on that for a second.”
Hart’s change of heart
At one point during the interview, Ziwe challenged Hart, bringing up the 2019 Oscars. The actor stepped down from hosting the event after his 2011 tweets about how he would react if he discovered that his son was gay resurfaced. Hart decided to give up the opportunity instead of apologizing at the time, but eventually issued a statement, thanks to nudges from peers like Wanda Sykes.
Ziwe tested Hart’s current stance on queer-related topics, questioning him about whether he would ever play a gay role and what his favorite letter in the LGBTQIA+ alphabet is.
“Well, you don’t have to constantly do something if you’re accountable and you are strong enough to stand in whatever the line of fire is to say things,” Hart responded when Ziwe asked if he’d ever apologize to the community again. “So, whether it’s been the family or friends or gay people in the past, accountability is key. And I think to all of those people that were mentioned in that particular question, I have definitely been aware and accountable.”
In his latest Netflix special, Acting My Age, released on Monday, Nov. 24, Hart also speaks about the evolution of his family’s views on the gay community; he opens up the new project with a joke about how one of his relatives’ decisions to come out prompted a different perspective for a lot of his loved ones.
