After an exciting breakout year, Megan Thee Stallion is back home in Texas for the holidays and opening up about the loss of her mother and great-grandmother.
Despite the success of songs like “Hot Girl Summer" and "Big Ole Freak" and signing a management deal with Roc Nation, the blossoming rapper has also experienced devastating loss this year.
The 24-year-old lost her mother, Holly “Holly-Wood” Thomas to a brain tumor in March. Her great-grandmother passed away the same month.
Now, the Houston native is opening up about spending her first holiday without them and giving advice to those facing similar circumstances. On Christmas Eve, she posted a video to Instagram encouraging anyone suffering from grief to try keeping their head up.
“Although all these positive things have been happening to me, and I’ve been trying to do good, been trying to keep a smile on my face, stay strong, to stay happy for me and my other grandmother and the rest of my family, it's pretty hard,” the rapper said. “This is the first Christmas that I’m [spending] without them, and I just wanted to give some hope to my hotties that might be going through something too.”
Megan told her fanbase of “Hotties” she knows she isn’t the only one facing hard times. She offered hope to her followers, saying the pain is temporary.
“I just wanted to spread some positivity and tell y'all to stay positive, stay kind through your hard times because the pain doesn’t last forever. Try not to get in a dark place,” she added. “Always try to be kind to others because you never know what they’re going through.”
In the caption of her emotional video, she expresses appreciation for her fans direct messaging her, checking in and making sure she’s okay. She admits that she’s “still in a bad place” in regard to the loss of her loved ones but said she will continue to be strong.
Many fellow celebrities, along with Megan’s Hotties showed their support in the comment section.
“Love to you baby,” commented Keke Palmer.
“Love you sis,” Jordyn Woods replied.
“GOD BLESS YOUR HEART!!! It’s ok to not be strong all of the time. It’s OK to not be ok sometimes. I love you sis. Praying for your peace this holiday season!!! Sending you virtual hugs!!!” actress Taraji P. Henson commented.
Megan has often said she was inspired by her mother to become a rapper.
“My mom was a rapper. Ever since I could remember she would have me in the waiting room in the studio, but I’m at the door listening like ‘ok, yeah, that’s what you said,’” she said in a video posted to Instagram.
Thomas had quit her job to manage her daughter full-time, according to HipHop DX.
The “Big Ole Freak” rapper has also described her mom as her biggest cheerleader and biggest critic.
“My mama is still my rock, my world and my inspiration. ima go 100x harder because I kno that’s what she would want me to do,” she wrote on Instagram.
