A text claiming a New York Police commander instructed officers to shoot rapper 50 Cent "on sight" has prompted an internal investigation.

Deputy Inspector Emanuel Gonzalez, who serves as the commanding officer of the 72nd Precinct in Brooklyn, is under investigation after a text threatening the "In Da Club" artist surfaced online.

According to the New York Daily News, Gonzalez reportedly made the threat ahead of a roll call at the start of an NYPD-sanctioned boxing match on June 7 of last year. An officer, taken aback by the comment, texted it to other officers. 

“The inspector just said at roll call if u see Kurtis Jackson [aka 50cent] shoot on site … I’m like wtf,” the officer wrote on June 8, according to a copy of the text obtained by the Daily News. Curtis Jackson is 50 Cent's birth name.

Eventually, the alleged statement made its way to One Police Plaza, sparking the ongoing investigation.

The conflict between the rap icon and top officer stemmed from an alleged threat before the boxing match, which was held in the Bronx. CBS New York reports 50 allegedly made a threat aimed at Gonzalez on Instagram in a now-deleted post.

Gonzalez reportedly filed an aggravated harassment complaint following the threat. According to the Daily News, 50 expressed his concerns around a lawsuit claiming Gonzalez shook down the owners of the now-closed Sunset Park club Love and Lust.

The Power actor and creator wrote, “Get the strap,” a term that means “get a gun.” 50 uses the term frequently in his social media posts. 

In the alleged shakedown, Gonzalez demanded club owners give him 11 free round-trip plane tickets to Puerto Rico and a generator for a doctor after Hurricane Maria. 

The New York Post reports club owner Imran Jairam claims police unfairly targeted his establishment from 2014 to 2017. Love and Lust lost its liquor license due to various violations and has now shut its doors, a lawsuit claims. No charges were filed against Gonzalez. 

On Sunday, 50 took to Twitter blasting the officer for allegedly threatening his life.

"This guy Emanuel Gonzales is a dirty cop abusing his POWER," he wrote. "The sad part is this man still has a badge and a gun." 

Amid his call for New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and others to discipline Gonzalez, 50 wrote he would take the appropriate legal avenues to protect himself. 

De Blasio has yet to make a statement regarding the back-and-forth between the officer and rapper. However, the police department will conduct an investigation. “The matter is under internal review,” a New York Police Department spokesperson told CBS News. 

In the meantime, Gonzalez remains on duty.
