Senator and presidential hopeful Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) announced she's promoted her senior adviser Anne Reid to chief of staff.

This appointment makes Reid the only Black woman to hold the position for a Democratic senator, according to The Philadelphia Tribune. Warren made the announcement last Thursday.

“Anne is a gifted leader and committed public servant,” Warren said in a press release. “Anne’s experience serving our country and working to improve the health and well-being of millions of Americans will be invaluable as we continue our fights to level the playing field.”

Reid has extensive history in politics and advocacy. She served as a counselor to U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell during President Obama’s second term. Additionally, she worked with Democratic representative Henry Waxman (D-CA) on the House’s Energy and Commerce and Oversight & Government Reform Committees. Reid was also a legal assistant for Senator Christopher Coons (D-DE).

Spencer Overton, president of The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, believes Warren is on the right track with this latest promotion. The Joint Center tracks the diversity of Congressional staffers.

“Black women play a critical role in our democracy, and Senator Warren’s appointment of a talented staffer like Anne Reid recognizes that Americans from all backgrounds can serve in a leadership role at the highest levels of government,” Overton said. “Other senators and House members should take notice.”

As NPR reports, Warren announced the formation of her presidential exploratory committee on New Year’s Eve.

The senator has made an effort to reach of to Black voters of late, like when she criticized the systematic marginalization of Black people during a December 14 commencement speech at the historically Black Morgan State University, The New York Times reports.

“I’m not a person of color,” she told the graduates. “And I haven’t lived your life or experienced anything like the subtle prejudice, or more overt harm, that you may have experienced just because of the color of your skin. Rules matter, and our government — not just individuals within the government, but the government itself — has systematically discriminated against Black people in this country.”
