Growing up, Sesame Street was a pivotal part of our development, with its segments and characters leaving an indelible mark not only on our individual lives, but pop culture. So it comes as no surprise that the long-running series has decided to celebrate Black History Month in a nostalgic way. The producers of the show have reached into the Sesame Street archives and shared videos that featured prominent black figures as guests. Old clips featuring Maya Angelou, Destiny's Child, Erykah Badu and Ray Charles can now be viewed on the show’s YouTube channel.

A spokesperson touched on representation in a statement to the Huffington Post. She says the inclusion of multiple races, lifestyles and stories are part of the show’s “DNA.” “Studies show that kids engage and learn more fully when they see themselves reflected onscreen, and Sesame Street is for ALL children around the world.”
