President Donald Trump has given a vague statement about his proposed $2,000 stimulus checks. He failed to give a clear answer when he was asked about his plan during an NBC News interview.

What did Trump say about his $2,000 stimulus checks?

In his interview with NBC Nightly News anchor Tom Llamas, Trump said he’s looking at his plan “very seriously.” However, he didn’t provide any clarity on the idea.

“Oh yeah, sure. I can do that,” Trump told Llamas about whether he’ll send checks to Americans, according to NJ.com. “I haven’t made the commitment yet, but I may make the commitment.”

Llamas also asked if the plan is a “done deal,” to which Trump replied, “Well, I just gave 1776, right.”

He also said that over one million military service members would receive a $1,776 check.

Still, Llamas continued to press Trump on his plan for giving $2,000 stimulus checks to Americans, telling him that he said “all Americans.”

Trump, however, continued to focus on his support for the military: “You know, it was 1775. They presented it to me because that’s what we have in a budget that I created, ‘cause I wanted to take care of our military. Nobody takes care of the military like I do.”

Trump then explained why he chose the specific amount of $1,776: “You know that’s quite a famous date, right? So I gave 1776 to our military, and they are very thankful. And now, I may be doing that with regard to the entire population.”

Trump announced the idea of $2,000 checks in November 2025

At that time, Trump said that “a dividend of at least $2,000 a person (not including high income people!) will be paid to everyone.”

He said the funds are generated from the revenue created by his controversial tariffs. Trump also added that the revenue will pay down the country’s $38 trillion debt.

Trump hasn’t clarified who qualifies for the stimulus checks. However, he told the New York Times that low- and middle-income Americans may receive payments “toward the end” of 2026.
