We told you not long ago about the cast of the CW’s newest superhero show, Black Lightning.

Today, thanks to it being upfront season, we got our first look at the show.

Starring Cress Williams as the titular Black Lightning, the trailer shows a hero who’s chosen to hang up the cowl in order to focus on being there for his family.

Of course, while the hero is away, the city’s villains play, and things grow worse and worse.

Finally, when his family is threatened, Black Lightning suits up again to battle the 100, a gang of arcane criminals that originated in Spain during the Middle Ages who literally feed on human suffering.

Although CW’s DC czar Greg Berlanti is involved in the project, the show apparently  will not be part of the CW’s Berlantiverse, a shared DC universe that features Supergirl, the Martian Manhunter, the Flash, the Green Arrow, as well as the time traveling team the Legends of Tomorrow.

Those hoping for a crossover episode need not fear, however — Supergirl originally wasn’t part of the Berlantiverse either.

Perhaps because Black Lightning takes place in a separate reality, the show seems distinct from the CW’s current offerings, in part because of its focus on family: Black Lightening’s daughters seems as though they won’t be sidekicks, damsels or mcguffins, but characters fully integral to the show.

Which is encouraging, because the two young women, in the comics, eventually become the heroes known as Thunder and Lightning.

The trailer seems to show one of the women discovering her powers, so here’s hoping they’ll be suiting up alongside their father to fight evil.

The teaser doesn’t give a date for the Black Lightning’s television debut, however, it is believed that the show won’t be on until midseason.

Keep your eyes peeled — as the trailer says, Black Lightning’s back!
