How many black comedy sitcoms can you name? I’ll wait…
Just when it seemed things were going good for the critically acclaimed Carmichael Show, it has been cancelled after only three seasons, or 2.5, as executive producer and star of the show, Jerrod Carmichael, likes to point out.
The Carmichael Show follows the life of Jerrod Carmichael and his no-hold-guards fictional family, featuring his girlfriend Maxine (Amber Stevens West), brother Bobby (Lil Rel Howery), Bobbies ex-wife Tiffany (Tiffany Haddish), mother Cynthia (Loretta Devine) and father Joe (David Alan Grier) as they tackle hard hitting social and political issues.
These issues, including rape, Bill Cosby, Trump and transgender, just to name a few, are touchy subjects, yet the show makes it real and relatable.
It’s also is one of the few black shows that is not degrading to black America, but shows an everyday black family having ordinary conversations that will make you relook at your perspective, while considering other perspectives in the situation. And let’s not forgot, you will laugh.
Reports are claiming Jerrod Carmichael decided to walk away from the sitcom after NBC refused to air episode 3, which was titled “Shoot-Up-Able” that depicted Carmichael as a mass shooting survivor. However, considering that the Virginia gunning incident was a very recent event, NBC decided to pull out the episode temporarily and air it as season 3's sixth episode.
Whether these reports are true or not, we are sad to see this show go. In a world where “we will find out on the next episode of Dragon Ball Z,” it would be nice if BET, TV One or even OWN picked up the sitcom. Until then you can watch The Carmichael Show Wednesday’s at 9/8c on NBC, or the first two seasons on Netflix.
