Black excellence has been abound at the box office lately.
After Black Panther reigned for five weeks, Pacific Rim Uprising took over this past weekend.
However, there is a box office statistic that you probably haven’t realized, that was brought to the attention of Twitter by filmmaker Matthew A. Cherry.
Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time had $33 million opening weekend, which was actually higher than the box-office topper, the John Boyega-fronted Pacific Rim Uprising ($28), as well as Alicia Vikander in Tomb Raider ($23.5 million) and Jennifer Lawrence in Red Sparrow ($20 million).
Also, this past weekend, it became the highest-grossing film by a black woman director.
Another great statistic, per Scott Mendelson, the Forbes film writer who penned a controversial piece on Black Panther’s success, Pacific Rim Uprising‘s top debut is the 17th weekend in the past 18 weeks that the top movie was a film that doesn’t star a white guy.
Here’s to more diverse representation in film!
