A Charlotte grandmother was left feeling embarrassed and ashamed after an employee told her she couldn't use the restroom at a gas station.

According to WBTV, Evelyn Redic said a gas station employee told her the bathrooms were for employees only on Sunday, June 24. Redic had gone to church earlier that day on the church van, and it had a flat on the return trip. Stranded, Redic needed to relieve herself but was forced to do so in the grass.

"She said, 'I have never been so embarrassed,'" Redic's granddaughter, Katossa Glover recalled.

Glover took to Facebook sharing her grandmother's unfortunate experience with the world or having to use the restroom outside on the grass near the gas station's parking lot.

As someone who lived through the Jim Crow south, access denial to public places was an emotionally draining experience for Redic.

"People are tired of being mistreated," Glover said, "and a woman who has been here since 1929, who has gone through that, will not experience that in 2018 without the community fighting."

Redic's story has caused many people to wonder why the employee wouldn't make an exception for her, considering her age.

"She's a human being, and they are human," County Commissioner Vilma Leake said. "That is out of the ordinary to say no to somebody that age."

Glover said Redic had to be hospitalized after the incident.

"She is still very weak," she said of her grandmother. "She's resting."

The county is moving to require that all gas stations have restrooms available for public use; however, the family of Redic is still hoping for a public apology, and they plan to protest until one is received.
