A black Smith College student who was trying to eat her lunch was left confused when campus police approached her. Oumou Kanoute was on break from her on-campus job when an employee called the police to report a student of color who appeared to be "out of place."

CNN reports campus police responded to the call, but upon seeing Kanoute, determined that there was nothing suspicious about her. According to The New York Times, the person who reported her referred to her as a “suspicious black male sitting in the common room.”

Kanoute posted about the incident on Facebook:

The officer seemed to handle the situation well. According to Kanoute, the officer apologized on behalf of the caller she described as “the racist punk who called the police on me for absolutely nothing.” Smith College's president, Kathleen McCartney, has since issued an apology, according to CNN.

"This painful incident reminds us of the ongoing legacy of racism and bias in which people of color are targeted while simply going about the business of their daily lives," McCartney said. "Clearly, we have important work to do going forward as a community."

McCartney also noted the college would be hiring a third-party investigator to review the incident.
