Beyoncé dressed as music icons Bette Davis and Prince for Halloween this year. And now she’s channeling ’90s icon Pamela Anderson as she encourages fans to get out there and vote.
On Election Day, Beyoncé finally gave fans something they’ve been begging for: a music video. She dropped a video clip for “Bodyguard” off her latest album, Cowboy Carter. This is not only the music superstar’s first video from the Cowboy Carter era, but the first from her three-act album trilogy that began with Renaissance.
In the video, she channels Anderson, specifically in the TV show Baywatch, the 1996 film Barb Wire and at the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards. She even pokes fun at the fact that she hasn’t released videos for her latest two albums — “No Visual Awards” is part of the replicated MTV emblem.
The latest visual came as a surprise to the BeyHive, given the superstar’s explanation for not releasing visual projects for Renaissance and Cowboy Carter.
“I thought it was important that during a time where all we see is visuals, that the world can focus on the voice. The music is so rich in history and instrumentation. It takes months to digest, research and understand. The music needed space to breathe on its own,” she told GQ earlier this year. “Sometimes a visual can be a distraction from the quality of the voice and the music. The years of hard work and detail put into an album that takes over four years! The music is enough. The fans from all over the world became the visual. We all got the visual on tour. We then got more visuals from my film.”
At the end of the clip, the word “vote” briefly appears on the screen. As Blavity reported, Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland officially endorsed Kamala Harris at a Houston rally nearly two weeks ago. Bey’s mom, Tina Knowles, also appeared at the rally.
“H-town! We are so happy to be standing here on this stage as proud country Texan women, supporting and celebrating the one and only Vice President Kamala Harris,” Queen Bey told the crowd. “A woman who’s been pushing for what this country really needs right now: unity. It’s impossible to not feel the energy in this room. The positivity, the community, the humanity.”
