Meek Mill may be free, but his courtroom saga is far from over, and he recently suffered a bump in the road to complete relief.
New court documents related to Meek's request for a new trial have been released, and, according to Vulture, Judge Genece Brinkley isn't giving Meek any slack.
“After an in-depth review of the record, court history, notes of testimony and evidence submitted at the evidentiary hearing,” Brinkley said, “This court hereby denies defendant’s petition for PCRA relief as the defendant failed to meet his burden of proof.”
Given a series of scandals involving the judge on the case, courthouse officials and the officer who first arrested Meek, the rapper and his supporters hoped to have a new trial. This push was supported by Pennsylvania's governor and Philadelphia's district attorney.
Meek was first arrested a decade ago on drug and gun charges. An officer involved in that arrest was found to have been known to be untrustworthy by the Philly DA's office, putting his testimony into question.
Judge Brinkley has been involved in her share of drama surrounding Meek's case, including an FBI investigation and an alleged personal conflict of interest.
During his time behind bars for violating his parole, and following his release from prison, Meek has become a vocal critic of the modern criminal justice system and recently threw up a symbolic middle finger to his past probation punishment by riding a dirt bike during his Summer Jam performance.
“We are not surprised by Judge Brinkley’s decision,” noted Meek’s attorney, Joe Tacopina. “Despite the agreement of the District Attorney’s office on the need for a new trial, and the granting of new trials to other identically situated defendants, Judge Brinkley made clear during the hearing on June 18 that she had already decided the matter. We continue to believe that this miscarriage of justice will be corrected upon further review, and that the public’s confidence in the impartiality of the judicial system in Pennsylvania will be restored.”
