With this year’s WWE SummerSlam in the rearview mirror, a couple of things are for certain. For one, John Cena is absolutely the fans’ favorite again after a show-stealing performance during night two. But Naomi is also cementing herself as a heel that’s nothing to play with after a classic show opener on night two as well. After cashing in her Money In The Bank briefcase at WWE Evolution, Naomi once again became the Women’s Champion, this time holding the World Title iteration. Due to the nature of her interrupting an ongoing match with Iyo Sky and Rhea Ripley, a rematch was set for SummerSlam. It pitted all three ladies, and it didn’t disappoint.
It has to be stated that for about the last year or two, the women of the WWE have really put on amazing triple-threat matches. We can go down the list of the many that left us all speechless as fans. Sunday night’s SummerSlam showing was no different, and Naomi, as resourceful as ever, came out on top. Defeating Ripley and Sky gave the former “Funkadactyl” a win over two very credible former champions. As Naomi continues to craft who she is in this antagonist’s frame, these big wins are crucial.
Superstar Naomi’s aura
Beyond the wins, what’s also important for Naomi’s current run is how she’s presented. Aside from the fly attire she sports, Naomi is now getting the huge special entrances. In what could only be seen as such a proud moment, Naomi had her guitarist father, Derek Mack, play her down to the ring. Naomi, a trained dancer and former Orlando Magic performer, continues to show that the showmanship runs in her blood. So, from the moment the Women’s Champion entered MetLife Stadium last Sunday, before she threw one punch, we were all supposed to take her seriously.
Not your same ol’ Naomi
For a wrestler like Naomi, whose persona at times seemed to lack depth on the main roster, she’s showing the vision she’s had for herself. After a return to the WWE about 18 months ago, fans knew things wouldn’t remain the same for long. Her breakup with the Big 3 aided her in forging a new and compelling path. It’s one that has proven itself to be effective, as the fan response is what I’m sure they’ve been wanting. Some would say that she is indeed “over.” I’d certainly have to agree.
What’s refreshing about this iteration of Naomi is that this heel presentation isn’t your typical chicken s**t heel. She, in fact, has been looking for the fight. It’s a fresh approach that makes us, as fans, simply want to see the fight and figure out how she’ll finagle her way to a win. We’re now on such a fun ride to witness what a dominant championship run looks like for Naomi. Between now and then, it would behoove us all to heed her words and “proceed with caution.”
