A police union in South Carolina is demanding author Angie Thomas' popular young adult novel centering around a police brutality incident be removed from a high school summer reading list.
The New York Times bestselling fiction book The Hate U Give has been critically acclaimed and recently adapted for film. Thomas' work also won her the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize 2018. Twitter even dedicated an entire day to sis for creating the powerful novel. But, for some reason, some police officers don't seem to be a fan of the work.
The Fraternal Order of Police Tri-County Lodge #3 is insisting the novel be eliminated from Wando High School's reading list. Thomas' book was among a list of four on the reading list for an English class at the school in the Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.
"Freshmen, they're at the age where their interactions with law enforcement have been very minimal," the union's president, John Blackmon, said according to News 2. "They're not driving yet, they haven't been stopped for speeding, they don't have these type [sic] of interactions. This is putting in their minds, it's almost an indoctrination of distrust of police and we've got to put a stop to that."
Thomas' book wasn't the only one on the list with which police found issue. All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely, which also discusses racism and police brutality, was included, as well.
"There are other socio-economic topics that are available and they want to focus half of their effort on negativity towards the police?" he added. "That seems odd to me."
In addition to the "influx of tremendous outrage" Blackmon says he's heard, a parent of a student at the school has also filed an official complaint. A committee will be established to review the complaint and establish a course of action within 30 days.
The outcry from the South Carolina police union doesn't mark the first time The Hate U Give has ruffled white feathers. In November, a Texas school district removed the novel from school bookshelves after a parent complained about the language featured in the book.
