Despite the widespread opposition to the Trump administration and its policies from much of the Black community, some hip-hop artists have associated themselves with President Donald Trump and the MAGA movement. Now, another rapper has assumed the role of a Trump ally after years of inconsistent political stances.

Sexyy Red performs as celebrities attend the wedding for Trump’s social media guru

Rapper Sexyy Red attended and performed at the wedding of Trump advisor Alex Bruesewitz, who oversees the president’s outside digital media efforts, to Carolina Urrea, a model and former Miss Nevada. Sexyy Red attended the event in Florida along with other celebrities, including rapper Nicki Minaj, boxer Mike Tyson and model Amber Rose, alongside Donald Trump Jr., White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt and Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr. Social media posts initially claimed 50 Cent performed at the event as well, but his camp has clarified that he performed at a New York City event on Saturday night. Social media footage shows Sexyy Red performing her song “Get It Sexyy” on stage during the event.

Rapper’s shifting political stances

Sexyy Red’s performance for Bruesewitz has been seen as a show of support by the rapper for Trump. Since coming to prominence in 2023 with her song “Pound Town,” Sexyy Red has taken a series of political stances. In 2023, she famously endorsed Trump, partially in response to the issuance of pandemic economic stimulus checks.

“But once he started getting Black people out of jail and giving people that free money. Awe, baby, we love Trump. We need him back in office,” she declared at the time, also saying, “I love Trump,” and “We need him back because, baby, them checks.”

But Sexyy Red changed her affiliation the next year, announcing that she had voted for Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.

“I just voted!!! Don’t tell us what to do with our coochies!! #Kamala4President,” she posted on social media in November.

Rappers get flak for MAGA alignment

If Sexyy Red has switched back to backing Trump, she would be part of a growing list of hip-hop figures to throw their support to the president and his MAGA movement. Last year, Snoop Dogg, formerly a fierce Trump critic during the president’s first term, was roasted for performing at a Trump-related inauguration event. Nelly, who also performed at a Trump inauguration event, recently received backlash when he and Ludacris were both billed as performers for a pro-MAGA music festival; Ludacris later dropped out of the concert, claiming his inclusion had been the result of a “mix-up.” Most notably, Nicki Minaj — who was also at Saturday’s wedding — has become increasingly vocal in her support for the president and the MAGA movement over the past few months. She appeared with Trump for the first time last week, holding his hand, declaring herself “the president’s No. 1 fan” and claiming that criticism “actually motivates me to support him more.”

Now, another popular rapper has (re)joined the MAGA camp, if Saturday’s performance is to be taken as indicative. Given her track record, Sexyy Red could take yet another political stance in the future, but for now, it appears that she’s returned to supporting Trump and the like.
