Silicon Valley boards have been getting blacker and blacker!
Fresh off of news that Linda Johnson Rice has joined Tesla’s board, and the announcement that Serena Williams will be helping to guide SuveryMonkey, comes the news that former Obama administration advisor Valerie Jarrett has joined the board of Lyft.
In a press release, Lyft said that it asked Jarrett aboard after an exhaustive search during which the company spent “months” looking for someone who could “add new skill sets, experience and perspective to our board.”
Beyond the obvious experience Jarrett gained guiding Obama-era policy, Lyft noted that the former senior advisor has a great deal of urban planning and transportation experience, having once served the city of Chicago both as the head of the Chicago Transit board and as its commissioner of planning and development.
Lyft’s co-founders had nothing but good things to say about Jarrett.
“Valerie is one of our country’s foremost leaders and a distinguished public servant, and a natural fit for our board,” Lyft CEO and co-founder Logan Green said.
The riding sharing company’s president, co-founder John Zimmer, added, “Valerie … has a perspective that will push Lyft forward as we work to improve people’s lives with the world’s best transportation.”
For her part, Jarrett echoed Lyft’s excitement, and also used the occasion to get in a subtle dig at the company’s chief rival, Uber.
“I am a frequent Lyft passenger and have been inspired by the strong community John and Logan have created that is dedicated to enlighten corporate values.”
Before Eric Holder’s reformation of Uber, that company’s corporate values included things like “Always Be Hustlin’” and “Principled Confrontation.” It also became the target of a #deleteUber social media campaign, after allegations of racism, sexism and a toxic corporate culture surfaced.
Lyft has thus far managed to avoid this sort of negative press.
The new board seat marks the third advisory role Jarrett has taken on in her post-White House life. She also sits on the board of Mellody Hobson’s Ariel Investments and is an advisor to The Obama Foundation.
Talk about Black Girl Magic.
Congratulations to Jarrett on the new position!
